Alistair Hardy, Director
Hello, In the past three years, I've planted over 40,000 native trees and shrubs, initially using plastic pots and bags. These traditional methods posed challenges such as being heavy, fragile, and generating non-eco-friendly waste that cluttered our site. Transporting these plants added 25% to their cost due to high freight and labour expenses, and it took considerable time to remove them from their containers. Additionally, disposing of plastic waste was problematic.
In the last 15 months, the revolutionary ELLEPOT system has transformed our process. Used locally in Rotorua by WaiNot Native Nursery in Waikite Valley, this method has drastically lowered freight costs. A significant number of plants can now be transported in a single degradable box and are ready to plant without unnecessary handling. The ELLEPOT system’s eco-friendly pots further reduce labour and environmental impact.
We can plant using a spade or, as I do, with a battery drill and auger, speeding up the process and reducing costs. Plants thrive better and grow faster; some native shrubs don’t even require later maintenance. The option to place a fertiliser tablet beside, not under, the tree further boosts growth, mitigating expensive follow-up care. This system allows for more efficient planting, improved plant survival rates, and notable cost savings.

Prior to using WaiNot Native Nursery, we encountered several challenges with traditional nursery stock:
Labor-intensive planting: Decanting plants from plastic containers was time-consuming and often resulted in root disturbance.
Plastic waste: The abundance of plastic containers generated significant waste and environmental concerns.
Planting speed: The process of planting from traditional containers was slow and inefficient.
Since partnering with WaiNot Native Nursery and utilizing their Ellebag system, we have experienced significant improvements:
Ease of Planting: revolutionized our planting process. The degradable bags allow for quick and efficient planting with minimal root disturbance.
Less damage to the plants root structure during transportation from storage area to planting site. This is due to not pulling rootbound plants from inundated trays/pots causing damage.
No soil loss from the root structures when decanting, resulting in reduced plant shock.
Increased Planting Speed: We have observed a substantial increase in our planting speed due to the streamlined planting process facilitated by Ellebags.
Reduced Labour: The elimination of the decanting process has significantly reduced labour requirements, resulting in increased efficiency and cost savings.
Environmental Benefits: By utilizing Ellebags, WaiNot Native Nursery aligns with our commitment to environmental sustainability. The reduction in plastic waste is a significant step towards minimizing our environmental impact.
Furthermore, using WaiNot Native Nurseries plants has helped us meet the increasing demands of our customers for more environmentally conscious practices.
We highly recommend WaiNot Native Nursery to any organization seeking high-quality native plants with a commitment to sustainability.
